In reference to Gitlin's article about the hegemonic processes in television entertainment, we began discussing the concept of photo shopping, and how these unrealistic images cause viewers to have unrealistic expectations of themselves, and how this leads to problems ranging from low self-esteem to diseases like anorexia.
An scarily accurate example of this is the Dove "Evolution" ad, which is part of the Dove "Real Beauty Campaign" (which is also what I wrote my paper on). The model starts out as a normal, reasonably attractive woman who is photoshopped beyond recognition to create this unrealistic super-woman that everyone will try, but be unable, to emulate.
This is just another instance of the negative effect of media technology on contemporary society.
I would also recommend watching the "Onslaught" commercial from the same campaign. It addresses the same issue, but the effect is much more chilling.
