One of the most popular music websites, billboard.com is a great source for the current main stream music and hegemonic ideals at working.
A site for popular music cannot even escape the "male gaze." Take a look at one of the photos that show up on the website.
Madonna is spreading her legs wide for the world to see, since that is what sexy is, or what women are trained to be, for the male gaze.
Then there is another photo, a story about Alicia Keys.
Both her arms are touching her thighs in some way or another, sending a sensual message. She has her left leg up on a stool with black stilettos on, permeating power and force. Also, her lips are slightly open, like most female models do in ads, to look appealing to men. So the male gaze is everywhere.
Artists and musicians who are supposed to be producing good music cannot live in today's society without promoting the hegemonic ideals and pose for the male gaze. Photographs and images are crucial in our media saturated society, so it is inevitable that all types of industries are unconsciously or consciously adhering to the dominant male gaze, not just fashion or advertising companies.
